Trevose, PA, October 3, 2016 – The CEI Group, Inc. today urged fleets to join the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) in its 2016 Drive Safely to Work Week campaign this week. The campaign’s theme is “Drowsy, Distracted or Focused…Your Decisions Drive Your Safety.”
“Traffic accidents remain the number one cause of on-the-job fatalities,” said Brian Kinniry, CEI senior director of strategic services. “More than 90% of collisions are caused by driver error, so avoiding impairment from fatigue, staying alert and avoiding distractions behind the wheel can eliminate thousands of needless tragedies every year.” CEI is a NETS Safety Program sponsor.
A free fleet campaign toolkit, complete with a driver self-assessment too, daily email messages, posters, web banners and other materials, is available on the NETS website; to download it, fleets can visit http://trafficsafety.org/dsww2016/index.html.
Mr. Kinniry said fleets should remember to aim safe driving communications more than its officially designated fleet drivers. “Employees who only occasionally drive their own vehicles while on company time – so-called ‘gray fleet’ drivers – and secondary drivers are just as vulnerable to errors caused by lack of attention,” he explained.
By participating in Drive Safely to Work Week, fleets can reach 50% of the U.S. population, according to NETS. As its campaign launch letter points out, “more than half the people killed in traffic crashes in the U.S. last year were someone’s employee. They were moms and dads, daughters and sons, grandparents, aunts and uncles, best friends and colleagues. They were people just like you.”
NETS’ campaign toolkit warns fleets and drivers that:
- S. business lost more $47 billion and more than 1.6 million work days because of traffic accidents.
- Nearly than half of those losses are the result of accidents that occur off the job.
- Using hands-free devices while driving is just as dangerous as hand-held.
- Safe driving requires seven to eight quality hours of sleep every night.
